The foundation stone for the new Citizens Advice Bureau has been officially unveilled.

The ceremony marked a milestone for the Harrogate charity’s building project.

Harrogate CAB, which is a stand alone charity and does not receive any funding from the Government, has been working to raise the £800,000 needed for the new purpose built town centre offices.

Performing the unveiling were Jeremy Burton and Phillip Morris of the Audrey and Stanley Burton Charitable Trust together with Andrew Jones MP.

The foundation stone also revealed the name of the building – The Audrey Burton House.

Located at Queensway, Harrogate, the building was named after Stanley Burton’s wife, Audrey, both of the Burton Tailoring Group. Mrs Burton was also a long standing volunteer at Harrogate CAB, having served the chrity for for 29 years.

Mr Burton said both he and Mr Morris felt Mrs Burton would have been delighted, if not a little embarrassed, that the work of the CAB would be continued in a building bearing her name.

The charity is hoping the new building will open to the public on January 21 next year with an official opening taking place later in the year

Patron Andrew Jones said:“The Harrogate Citizen’s Advice Bureau does important work helping local people who are in difficult situations by offering free advice.

“I have seen its work first hand on several occasions, most recently last month when I helped out during my Volunteer Week.

“The unveiling of the name at the new CAB office was a real landmark.

“It also gave us a first glimpse of the fantastic new facilities.

“Despite being an important part of the local community, the CAB has never owned its premises before, so this will give the charity more control over its own destiny.

“It will also make a huge difference to the service it can offer as this centre is designed specifically for the charity’s needs.”

“Congratulations to everyone in the team for delivering this great project.”

The move to the new site has been in the planning for two years since Harrogate Borough Council announced it wanted the charity’s current Victoria Avenue office back.

Speaking at the topping out ceremony held in October, Maris Williams, CAB Harrogate Service Manager said: “One of the best features of the new building will be that it is on one level. At the moment we are spread over four floors, so it will be great for our disabled clients, staff and volunteers for access.

“It is also important to have privacy in the rooms, and the new rooms will be soundproof, so that will make a huge difference.”

Bricklink, one of the largest brick factors in the UK, have been instrumental in supplying all the facing brick and blocks to the new offices for the Citizens Advice Bureau in Harrogate.

The Architects, PCP of Harrogate, called Bricklink in to provide their expertise in providing suggestions to the architect of building materials for all the external elevations. All these materials were to be supplied via Bricklink, who were responsible for getting both manufacturers to provide these by way of a donation. The project is now well under construction and is looking really stunning.
